Theses provide a snapshot of what students and their advisors were interested in at any given time in MIT's history. Biographers often read a subject's student work to trace ideas or career objectives back to their source. Historians use old theses to identify historical trends. Theses raise questions and point the direction for future research. Faculty members, students, and other scholars use the thesis collection at MIT to determine what facts have been established, what problems have been solved, and what topics remain to be explored. Harold ("Doc") Edgerton's 1931 study of efficiency in synchronous motors, I. M. Pei's 1940 design for standardized propaganda units for China, and Ellen Swallow Richards's 1873 observations about sulpharsenites and sulphantimonites were first coherently expressed in tangible form as MIT theses.Because the fields of mathematics and science often depend heavily on abstract thought, the student who is writing an MIT thesis should be sure to inform his or her major professor of the thesis's progress, lest the abstract thought contain a flaw that destroys the validity of the entire hypothesis. However, the student should not be afraid to be bold and to defend his or her ideas even when the professor doubts them; the goal of a thesis is to think through and adequately defend an idea that no one has previously considered in quite the same way.Students write MIT theses as the largest, most in-depth tasks of the degrees they are pursuing, whether undergraduate or graduate. Because MIT is a school that focuses on science and mathematics, students will probably write their MIT theses as an explanation of a separate project or as a proof for a theory they have been formulating; therefore, while the text of an is important, the foundational project is generally more important. The doctoral thesis committee has the responsibility of advising the student on all aspects of the thesis experience, all the way up through the preparation and defense of the final thesis document. The student and supervisor will hold progress reviews with the entire thesis committee at least once a year and written feedback to the student is required, which will also be submitted to the Departmental Committee on Graduate Students. The thesis advisor holds responsibility for assembling this written feedback and sharing it with the Departmental Academic Office and the student. Frequent meetings of the thesis committee are strongly recommended.
