The Mesquite Elks Lodge #2811 sponsors an Americanism Essay Contest for 5th grade students in all of the elementary schools within the Virgin Valley. It is left up to each school administration and the 5th grade teachers to determine if they wish to encourage their students to participate. This very important Patriotic Contest gives students the opportunity to express views on their pride in America.

The annual Elks Americanism Essay Contest is a program of the Elks’ Fraternal Committee, this contest is for students in 5th through 8th grades and is designed to promote patriotism.Three local students recently took first place in the District 5 American Legion Auxiliary Americanism essay contest. And two of those students went on to place first in the statewide competition, according to information from the Unit No. 54 American Legion Auxiliary in Moab.On Wednesday, April 4, 2012 Mrs. Sue Knight, Chaplain and Scholarship Chairman of the Willoughby-Cleveland Elks Lodge #18, presented the winners of the recent Americanism Essay Contest sponsored by the Elks Lodge and Mrs. Kline. This year’s theme was The winners in the seventh and eighth grade division were:Section 814(b). The National Committee on Americanism-Patriotism shall conduct an Americanism Essay Contest, each year, in accordance with the provisions of the appropriate standing rule.The NJSEA will once again be holding the Americanism Challenge, please print up the entry sheet and keep track of all your Americanism Programs and Activities. On March 15th send your entry form to your District Chairs, the lodge with the highest amount of recorded items will receive a recognition plaque at the Summer Convention in Wildwood.
